Travel vaccines and malaria updates

Advisable to visit your doctor 4-6 months before your travel, to get some medicines you may need and also during your travel. Get travel vaccines and medicines because there is a risk of these diseases in the country.

Routine Vaccines

These are recommended for all travellers and these vaccines include, age specific routine vaccines, like measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) tetanus diphtheria-pertussis (td/tdap), poliovirius, varicella, and seasonal influenza.

Yellow Fever,

Yellow fever certification is essential prior to your arrival in Uganda; it’s also recommended to administer for hepatitis A and B, Mengitis, tetanus, polio and typhoid vaccines.

Malaria

You’re advised to visit your doctor for recommendations before, during and after your tour to Uganda or tropical countries.

Visas:

Uganda immigration policies are not always consistently applied and may change without notice, travellers should pay close attention to the validity on their Visa and special pass, to avoid fines or interruptions during their travel.

A passport Valid for 6 months and beyond the date of entry is required; Visas are available at Entebbe airport upon arrival and may also be obtained at the embassy of Uganda in your country.

It’s recommended for travellers to obtain their visas to Uganda in advance especially travellers, who arrive via Land.

Fees:

The current fee for a three- month tourist visa obtained upon arrival at Entebbe International airport is us$50 per individual and for a 6-12 month multiple entry visa the cost is $100, cheques are not accepted, please note that the visa fee is none refundable, travellers entering Uganda via land border crossings may face various entry procedures. Travellers should be aware that a visa does not determines how long a person may remain in Uganda, this is Ugandan immigration officer at the port entry who will determine the length of your stay and it’s normally one to three months, as a tourist, please note Uganda Immigration imposes a fine of up to $30 per day for visa overstays and sometimes detains individuals who overstay their visa until the fine is paid. Extensions of duration of stay may be requested at Ugandan immigration headquarters on jinja road in Kampala. Airline companies may also require travelers to have a visa before boarding. Money

Cash can be changed easily at major banks and foreign exchange (forex) bureaus offer slightly better exchange rates than the banks; at most of the banks and forex bureaus, small denominations below $50 Usd, attracts a lower exchange rate and the rate for traveller’s cheque is about 2% lower than the cash. Exchange rates in Kampala are upto 15% better than is the case elsewhere in the country, so stock up on shillings in the Kampala city. Credit cards are not widely accepted; however they can be used at most of the major hotels in Kampala.

Airport taxis

When you land at Entebbe international airport is possible to hire airport tax that will take you to your destination. Airport taxis charges around $30-40USD, from the airport to kampala.it is about 45kms from the airport to Kampala and it can take anywhere for an hour to two hours to travel the distance-this all depends on the traffic.

Regulations governing importation of Dogs and Cats into Uganda

Movement permit

An official movement permit should be obtained from the veterinary authority for the area of origin.

Certificates

I. A bill of health certifying the pet is free from diseases.it should be issued by a registered veterinary surgeon or official and should be properly signed and stamped within ten days of shipment.

II. A certificate or letter from the local veterinary authorities indicating that the area of origin of the pet is free from rabies.

Vaccinations

I. Dogs require vaccination against distemper, hepatitis,leptospirosis,parov-virus and rabies.it should have been done not less than 30 days prior to arrival at any point of entry into Uganda

II. Cats require vaccination against feline enteritis and rabies. It should have been done not less than 30days prior to arrival at any entry into Uganda.

Transportation

While in transit, dogs and cats must not come into contact with other animals.to ensure this, each pet should be appropriately crated

Driving in Uganda

You can drive in Uganda using a foreign driving license for 3 months. After which you will need to get a Ugandan driving license from the Uganda revenue authority or and international driving permit; you will be given a temporary paper driving license which will be valid for one month after which you will take it back so as to get a driving license. The driving license is valid for 3 years, after which they need to be renewed.

Vehicles are driven on the left hand side of the road in Uganda. The speed limit on highways in Uganda is 80km/hrs. and in built up areas. You might not see the speed limit signs frequently in some places but take extra care because police strictly enforces this law and breaking speed limits can result in a fine, imprisonment or even both. While driving on the road in Uganda be aware of animal’s crossings, boda boda crossing, children and any other live stocks.

Drinking the water

It is advisable to drink bottled (mineral water) during your stay in Uganda as the water flowing from the taps is not treated.it is safe to brush your teeth using the tap water as long as you don’t swallow any of it .if you are not comfortable with this idea, use bottled water instead.
